The Home Things! story began in the fall of 2005.  At that time, I, Andrea, worked in the Human Resources department of a large organization.  Pat worked in manufacturing management, as he continues to do today. 

On a lark, that fall I enrolled in an entrepreneurship training series that was to begin in February 2006.  I had no intention of leaving my job; I was merely investigating the world of small business ownership.  I didn’t have a clue as to what type of business I would even launch.

The following January, I learned my corporate position was being eliminated.  Although I was given the opportunity to remain with the organization in an alternative capacity, I knew in my heart, after 16 years, it was time to move on. 

I completely immersed myself in my entrepreneurial venture.  The idea for Home Things! was born!  After several months of research and planning, grueling hours, and sleepless nights, we opened the doors to Home Things! on October 25, 2006. 

As our tag line suggests, our primary mission at Home Things! is to “Enliven Your Space”, as we believe that environment has a significant impact on quality of life.  In a world of homogenous, big box, self-service stores, we value old fashioned courtesy, quality, and customer service. 

We are proud that Home Things! provides a unique, one-of-a-kind shopping experience for residents and visitors alike, employment opportunities for others, improved economic viability for the region, and support to the community in which we live and do business.

The journey from no idea, to an idea, to a business plan, to a brick & mortar business has been a challenging one, to say the least.  The “to do” lists are long and the learning curve steep, but the sense of accomplishment is indescribable.  We have, at times, simultaneously felt completely in over our heads, scared out of our wits, and utterly incompetent, but the greatest gift has been realizing that anything is possible if you work hard and smart and believe in yourself.

We are blessed to be surrounded by supportive family, friends, business partners, employees, customers, and colleagues who have helped us through the inevitable rough patches launching a business presents.   It’s almost unimaginable to think of all the wonderful people we never would have met had we turned our backs on this adventure.
